Thirteen Days Post-Abduction

(Cody)

Cody was sick and tired of Gabriel’s brooding, angst-ridden bad boy act. Sure, he was rough around the edges, but that was no reason for him to be so self-loathing.

After they’d slept together, Cody had hoped that Gabriel would open up more, but instead he’d done the opposite. Aside from the odd lingering glance here and there and grunts in answer to Cody’s attempts at conversation, they barely interacted. All Gabriel did was stare into space with a look of intense concentration and twirl his ring around his finger.

It was enough to make Cody believe that Gabriel had been right. It had been a bad idea for them to hook up. He should have learned by now that no man was trustworthy. Now Cody was stuck here with nothing to do, no-one to even talk to. It was unbearable.

“What’s up?” he asked tentatively.

“Kidnapped.” One word answers were Gabriel’s thing lately.

“Yeah, me too,” said Cody.

His wry observation managed to coax a snort of laughter from Gabriel. It was the most reaction Cody had gotten from him in days. He forced his thudding heart to stay in his chest. He had to play his cards right if he wanted to reignite any friendship with Gabriel.

“You’ve been quiet lately.”

“No shit, Sherlock.” Gabriel paused for a long time. A deep crease settled between his thick eyebrows. “I’ve been thinking.”

“Thinking about what?” Cody asked.

Gabriel rolled his eyes and sighed. “I’ve been thinking about getting you out of here.”

Cody’s insides surged with trepidation. “What are you talking about?”

Gabriel avoided answering. “Wait for my signal.”

“What do you mean, getting me out of here? What about you?”

Gabriel shrugged.

“Would you stop being so damn noble, please?”

Gabriel glowered at him. “You’re getting out of here. That’s the end of it.”

Cody had no desire to let Gabriel sacrifice himself. “No-”

“This isn’t a discussion.”

Why did Cody’s opinion never matter? It didn’t matter to Peter at all, it hadn’t mattered when he’d come on to Gabriel, and it didn’t matter now. He was so tired of being told what to do.

He couldn’t deny that a part of him was excited by the idea of escape, ecstatic even. His pulse stuttered and his skin trembled in anticipation. But how could Cody get out and leave Gabriel alone, knowing that if Jeremy found out that Gabriel facilitated Cody’s escape, Gabriel would almost certainly be killed? It was too great a sacrifice for Cody to bear.

“When are we doing this?” Cody asked in a broken voice.

“The next time Jeremy comes in to feed us.”

“Why are you only telling me now?”

“To give you less time to try and talk me out of it.”

“Would talking you out of it work?”

Gabriel smirked. “No.”

“Will you at least talk to me before I have to leave you?” Cody didn’t mean for his voice to come out as plaintively as it did.

Gabriel’s face softened. “Talk about what?”

Cody drew a blank. All he could think about was what Gabriel was about to do. “Are you going to tell me your plan?” he asked.
